The Wildebeest Migration Is Not Random - Here Is the Science Behind It

More than a million wildebeest move in a roughly circular route across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem every year, following no visible leader, responding to no obvious single signal, yet arriving at specific locations with a timing precision that has supported predator populations and shaped the ecology of East Africa for millennia.
This is not random. It is one of the most sophisticated collective navigation systems in the animal kingdom, and understanding it will change both how you experience the migration photographically and what you understand about the ecosystem you are standing in.
What Drives the Migration
The wildebeest migration is fundamentally driven by rainfall and grass quality. Wildebeest are obligate short-grass grazers - they require fresh, short, nutritious grass to maintain body condition and successfully raise calves. The circular route they follow is a direct response to the seasonal movement of rainfall across the ecosystem.
The southern Serengeti and the Ndutu area of Tanzania receive their rains from roughly November to May. The grass that follows is nutritious and short, ideal calving habitat. The northern Serengeti and the Masai Mara receive their rains later, from May through to October. By the time the southern grass has dried and depleted, the north is green.
The migration is the population following this grass gradient. It is not a single event with a fixed date. It is a continuous, year-round movement that happens to include dramatic river crossings and concentrated grazing herds at specific times and locations.
The Calving Season: The Overlooked Phase
Between January and March, approximately 400,000 wildebeest calves are born in the southern Serengeti. The concentrated calving, which is itself a specific evolutionary strategy called predator saturation, where so many calves are born simultaneously that predators cannot consume them all, is one of the most extraordinary events in the mammal world.
This period is largely overlooked by photographers focused on the river crossings. It should not be. The density of newborn calves, the intensity of predator activity, and the behavioural complexity of the herds during calving season are remarkable. A calf can run within minutes of birth, it has to, in an environment with this concentration of predators. Watching a calf take its first steps while its mother's behaviour shifts to protection against approaching hyenas is as compelling as any river crossing.

The River Crossings: Chaos With Structure
The Mara River crossings, which happen between July and October as the herds move north into Kenya, are the most photographed event in African wildlife. The imagery is iconic: wildebeest launching from the bank into crocodile-filled water, churning chaos, animals swept downstream.
What looks like chaos has structure.
Crossings are initiated by specific individuals, not the oldest or most experienced, but typically animals positioned at the front of a massing herd who overcome threshold hesitation first. Research by Richard Despard Estes and subsequent work at the Mara has shown that crossings begin when a critical mass of animals is concentrated near a crossing point and an individual or small group makes the first move. The decision appears to cascade through the herd as a wave of social facilitation.
Crocodiles at regular crossing points are expert opportunists who have learned the timing and location of crossings. Nile crocodiles at the Mara can grow to enormous size on the seasonal abundance of the migration. Their hunting strategy is patient and precise, they hold position in the current, selecting individual animals that are separated from the group or struggling.
The crossing itself lasts from minutes to hours. Herds mass and mass on the bank, then surge, then stop, then surge again. Individual animals that reach the far bank frequently turn and re-enter the water, apparently pulled back by the herd. Animals that are separated in the current become isolated targets. The level of sensory chaos, the sound, the dust, the spray, the crocodile strikes, is unlike anything else in the natural world.

How to Photograph the Migration Effectively
Arrive before the herd. Crossings are preceded by hours of massing behaviour. Herds concentrate near traditional crossing points, mill, retreat from the bank, and mass again. This massing behaviour is itself compelling to photograph, and your vehicle positioning is far easier to optimise before the crossing begins than during it.
Know your crossing points. The Mara has several traditional crossing locations, and experienced guides know which are active in any given week based on herd movement. The crossings at the Serena and Governors' areas of the northern Mara are among the most reliable, but herd movement is responsive to rainfall and grass availability, and crossing locations shift between seasons. Work with your guide to identify which crossings are currently active rather than assuming the most famous locations will be in use.
Crossing telephoto vs environmental. The instinct is to shoot as tight as possible, a wildebeest mid-leap, a crocodile strike, a pair of animals in the water. These images are powerful and worth making. But also pull back. The full scope of a major crossing, with thousands of animals on both banks and hundreds in the water simultaneously, is an image that cannot be made tight. Alternate between close and wide to capture both the individual drama and the collective scale.
Patience over positioning. The biggest mistake photographers make at crossings is moving the vehicle repeatedly in search of better position once the crossing has begun. Movement at this stage costs you more than it gains. Find a position before the crossing, assess the light and the likely trajectory of the herd, and commit to it. The photographers who make the best crossing images are generally not the ones who are most aggressive about position, they are the ones who chose a good position early and stayed in it.
The aftermath is undershot. After the main body of a crossing has passed, look for the animals that are struggling, those caught in backwaters, those resting on mid-river banks, those that have been injured by the crossing or by crocodiles. The aftermath of a crossing has a quiet, exhausted quality that contrasts powerfully with the chaos preceding it and is rarely as crowded with other vehicles.
The Migration Beyond July
Most photographers who visit the migration see only the river crossings of July through October. The full annual cycle of the migration includes the calving season, the long dry-season trek northward, the crossings, and the return trek south, each phase with its own ecological character and photographic possibilities.
