The Three Autofocus Settings That Transformed My Wildlife Shots

Autofocus is one of the most misunderstood aspects of wildlife photography for beginners. Most people set their camera to some form of automatic AF area mode, point it roughly at the animal, and hope. The results are inconsistent, sometimes the camera locks on the eye, sometimes it finds the ear, sometimes it focuses on the grass in front of the animal and the subject is soft.


Three specific settings, applied together, eliminate most of this inconsistency.



Setting One: Continuous AF (AI-Servo on Canon)


The most fundamental AF setting for wildlife photography is continuous autofocus, called AI-Servo on Canon bodies, AF-C on Sony and Nikon.


In single-shot AF (One-Shot on Canon), the camera locks focus when you half-press the shutter and holds that point until you fire. This works for static subjects. For wildlife, where even a resting animal breathes, twitches, and adjusts its head, single-shot AF produces a meaningful percentage of soft frames.


Continuous AF tracks your subject actively while you hold the shutter half-pressed, or, better, while you hold your back-button focus button, adjusting continuously as the distance changes. For any animal that is moving, or might move, this is the correct mode.



Setting Two: Back-Button Focus


This is the change that makes the biggest practical difference in the field, and the one most beginners have not made.


By default, Canon cameras activate autofocus when you half-press the shutter button. The problem in wildlife photography is that you often want to recompose after locking focus. Standard half-press focus makes this difficult because moving the camera causes the AF to reacquire on whatever is now in the focus zone.


Back-button focus separates autofocus from the shutter button entirely. You assign AF to the AF-ON button on the back of the camera and disable it from the shutter. Your thumb holds AF continuously. Your index finger fires the shutter. You can recompose without losing focus lock. You can stop and resume tracking instantaneously.


Once you adapt to back-button focus, about a week of consistent use, returning to standard shutter-button AF feels limiting.



Setting Three: Subject Detection AF


Modern Canon mirrorless R-series bodies have Animal Eye Detection, a system that identifies animals in the frame and maintains focus on their eyes through movement, partial occlusion, and compositional repositioning. Sony and Nikon have equivalent systems.


For wildlife photography, this is genuinely transformative. The eye, the single most important sharp point in any animal portrait, is maintained in focus while you concentrate on composition and timing.


If your camera has subject detection AF, use it. If you are considering a mirrorless upgrade from a DSLR, subject detection AF is the single most practically useful technology difference between the systems.
